Do you have more to gain
through teaching or learning?
Here is a showcase of the outdoor-education work I have been involved with.
Flying Deer
Nature Center
Instructor
As an Instructor at Flying Deer Nature Center my role was to create lesson plans and then lead 5-12 children, ages 6-12, on weekly, themed adventures. Lessons included animals and their movement, wild edibles, wilderness survival, fire and shelter building, and more! I took time to interact and get to know the parents in order to learn more about the child to create an inclusive lesson plan. I also mentored teenagers who were in the counseling role.

Primitive Pursuits
Ithaca Forest Preschool and Elementary School Programs
While working with Primitive Pursuits I assisted with operating programs for the Ithaca Forest Preschool, an elementary school program called The Art of Nature, and two elementary school after-school programs. At each program I taught outdoor skills such as tree identification, friction fire making, and nature awareness, along with respect for nature and the importance of showing gratitude. When I was in the office I promoted special events and programs offered through the company and did various other work.
Natural Resources and Ecology
Teaching Assistant
As a Teaching Assistant to Dr. Jason Hamilton I taught students the processes of mycoagriculture, apiculture, and maple syrup production. Along with offering hands-on learning experiences, I authored and edited production manuals for agricultural products. I also managed the laboratory where students experiment with newly learned material, along with the Sugar Bush, Mushroom Room, and the Apiary. I held this position for two years after I had taken this course.

Head Teaching Assistant
As a Teaching Assistant to Dr. Jason Hamilton, Dr. Jacob Brenner, and Jed Jordan I organized and lead the additional Teaching Assistants through preparation workdays and task delegation. I prepared class supplies for the professors to promote an organized and comfortable learning environment for the students. I assisted in teaching and demonstrating outdoor awareness and survival skills to a class of mostly college freshman, but it also included sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Five Rivers Environmental Education Center
The Guided School Program
As an educator for the Guided School Program I taught World of the Pond (grades 5-7), and co-taught Stream Life (grades 3-4) and Animal Signs (grades 2-4). The purpose of each class is to expose children to the natural world that surrounds them and allow the students to lead their own exploring in order to formulate their own observations and questions.
